How Organizations Develop Activists: Civic Associations and Leadership in the 21st Century by Hahrie Han

What can an association can do to cultivate activism?
The key is that the high-engagement associations combine some form of transformational organizing with transactional mobilizing.

0:30 Three models of engagement:

0:34 Lone Wolves
Lone wolves do not put effort into engaging others, they focus instead on building power by becoming an accurate source of information and expertise for decision-makers. They often do this because they do not have the resources to engage large numbers of people in their work, or they do not think it is important. Because they are part of membership-based associations, they still have to keep others updated, but they do so by providing others with information and updates about their work.

1:18 Mobilizers
Mobilizers focus on maximizing the number of people involved without developing their capacity for civic action. Mobilizers build power by focusing on transactional outcomes like building the association’s membership. They try to get as many people involved as possible, but they do not try to transform or cultivate volunteers’ capacities for further activism. Instead, they take people where they are. Some people may act only once, and some may become involved over the long term. Some people may want to devote only a discrete amount of time to the association, while others may want to take responsibility for outcomes or become leaders. Mobilizers let people self-select the level of activism they want.

2:34 Organizers
Organizers invest in developing the capacities of people to engage with others in activism and become leaders. Organizers do not simply aggregate individuals but also create new relationships between them that generate new commitments and resources. By bringing people together for collective activity, associations teach people the basic skills of democratic citizenship while advocating for their members’ interests in the public arena.

3:27 This book studies two national US membership based organisations. One related to People for the Environment and the other was a National Association of Doctors. Generally a high engagement chapter acted as both mobilizer and organizer actions. Following up engagement one year showed that found that those in high-engagement chapters were much more likely to have taken action than those in low-engagement chapters. Low-engagement chapters either acted as lone wolves or focused solely on mobilizing.

When mobilizing, civic associations do not try to cultivate the civic skills, motivations, or capacities of the people they are mobilizing. Instead, they focus on maximizing numbers by activating people who already have some latent interest. Organizers, in contrast, try to transform the capacity of their members to be activists and leaders.

5:00 warning about organizers, if we’re going event by event, then it’s a problem because then there’s always another event we have to do. And the organizers can’t focus on the people. It’s so difficult to keep people engaged and there’s all these amazing people that come out to these events. Instead we should be organizing teams of volunteers who are organizing the events.

5:28 Time and effort are the most valuable resources activists have, the goal is to make the work quick and easy so that more people will do it. In practice, this means tasks are strictly limited in their time commitment and require minimal effort on the part of the activist. Thus, many associations will assign activists tightly structured tasks.

6:32 Activists must have opportunities to work with others, this can help activists operates on all the practical, emotional, and cognitive levels. Practical support includes material and technical skills and resources. Emotional and motivational support helps activists to navigate complex interpersonal dynamics and maintain their commitment. Cognitive support helps activists understand why their work matters people asked to reflect on their experience were much more likely to attend the follow-up meeting. People working interdependently are more likely to be committed to their work. When people are working alone, there is a greater burden on the work itself to be intrinsically motivating.

7:31 Asking people to reflect on their experience and to contextualize the meaning of their participation which can have a powerful effect.

8:48 Reciprocity, contact, and support are some of the factors that can increase the sense of social connectedness, thereby making people more responsive to requests for action.

One of the central findings of this book is that when associations manage to create those transformative experiences for their members, the members are more likely to engage in activism.

What if I told you it was more important for Black people to be liberated from anti-Black racism, than it is for you to be PERCIEVED as a good person? Over the year of 2020, we saw an increased level of awareness in non-Black people on the real issues of anti-Black racism across the United States, which led to an increase in performative activism. This talk dives into this phenomena, its impacts, and what real allyship looks like with Black people. A DEI speaker, consultant, and content creator who has committed himself to researching and educating people on the systemic oppressions impacting us every single day through an antiracist lens. He is the founder of McEachernSpeaks, which specializes in providing an IMPACTFUL experience through consultations, workshops, + conversations aimed at leading organizations to analyze unjust systems and create equitable spaces. Activist and fundraiser Dan Pallotta calls out the double standard that drives our broken relationship to charities. Too many nonprofits, he says, are rewarded for how little they spend -- not for what they get done. Instead of equating frugality with morality, he asks us to start rewarding charities for their big goals and big accomplishments (even if that comes with big expenses). In this bold talk, he says: Let's change the way we think about changing the world.

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). A wide range of Americans contributed to the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Students and young people were prominent groups of activists within the movement. Today, we'll learn about the Little Rock Nine, the Greensboro Four, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and the Freedom Riders. These groups undertook protests and worked to integrate schools and public accommodations by riding segregated buses, demanding service at lunch counters, and even by simply attending school.

Is our current idea of activism inspiring people to do nothing? Lea Ann Mallett's trajectory as a lifelong activist, from direct action civil disobedience protestor to charity executive director, led her to wonder just that. Lea Ann shares her new definition of activism which will shift the way you see your world, and open your eyes to the power you have to change it. Lea Ann Mallett is a lifelong activist, writer, photographer and a passionate storyteller. The trajectory of Lea Ann’s story has arced through her work as a direct-action wilderness activist for almost two decades as a non-profit executive director. “Cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it is the furthest thing from it...
...Because cynics don't learn anything. Because cynicism is a self-imposed blindness: a rejection of the world because we are afraid it will hurt us or disappoint us. Cynics always say 'no.' But saying 'yes' begins things. Saying 'yes' is how things grow.”

During his conversation with Justin, you'll hear Jason Russell lay out the first sentence of this Stephen Colbert quote, but it's the second, unspoken, part that truly fits with his journey.

During his time as Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer at Invisible Children, Jason pushed through hurdles that most people never even dream of encountering, showing how honesty, transparency, and passion magnify the impact each of us has on the world.

Invisible Children's KONY 2012 viral phenomenon (that little video with over 100 million views) sparked a movement due in large part to Jason's visionary storytelling, but the effects weren't all positive, especially for the Invisible Children team. While their hyperfocus on a singular goal led to incredible outward success, it also resulted in a breakdown of internal care—a topic that Jason has spoken candidly about in the years following the KONY 2012 campaign.

Doing his part to normalize our conversation around mental health isn't all that Jason brings to the table, though. You'll hear him discuss Oprah and Obama, the spectrum of activism, his reaction to renewed racial tensions in America, and bringing activism to new generations through a radical new project, Broomstick Engine.

From climate strikes to Extinction Rebellion, activism is gaining momentum around the world. At The Economist's Open Future Forum we spoke to three campaigners with different takes on how to be an activist today.

Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: https://econ.st/2xvTKdy

Activism today can take many different forms. Sokeel Park works with defectors from North Korea to accelerate change in the dictatorship. Nimko Ali leads a global campaign to end the barbaric practice of female genital mutilation. Richard Ratcliffe campaigns for the release of his wife from an Iranian prison. Three different activists talk about their campaigns and what they think it takes to be an activist in the 21st century.

If you look at activism around the world there seems to be an amazing sort of flowering of different approaches being taken to tackle these deep-seated problems. What does it take to bring about change in today’s world?

Nimko Ali’s activism grew from her personal experience as a survivor of female genital mutilation or FGM.

Richard Ratcliffe became an activist in 2016 when his wife Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was accused of plotting to overthrow the Iranian government.

The most important thing is to keep that hope that the world can be different, the world should be different and, you know, by God will I make it.

Should you start a nonprofit organization or a social enterprise? Is a social enterprise a nonprofit or a business? We’ll answer that and more in this video. #Nonprofit #Entrepreneurship #SocialEnterprise

I now work full time for the 501c3 nonprofit I started many years ago and love seeing the social impact we make in our community as we grow. As we’ve grown, we’ve incorporated parts of a social enterprise business model. I’ve also known many people who started with social entrepreneurship (vs a traditional nonprofit route) and are making an incredible impact on the world!

In this video I talk about what a social enterprise IS, and how it fits into starting a nonprofit or starting a business - because the truth is, social entrepreneurship can be a part of either a nonprofit or a for-profit business model. It’s ALL about making a difference on the world.
