La poesía lírica de Alfredo Espino trasciende a nivel internacional, sus poemas son parte de la cultura e identidad salvadoreña, su expresión autóctona y sencilla da significado al nombre de su libro Jícaras Tristes. Para Alfredo Espino, la expresión poética en sus versos trata sobre el sentimiento y las emociones más profundas del salvadoreño y de la belleza inexorable de nuestro país, El Salvador.
Jícaras Tristes es un libro muy especial porque conecta con las generaciones a través del tiempo, en su poesía se descubre la identidad del pueblo salvadoreño, la idiosincracia de nuestros ancestros, el valor incalculable de nuestra naturaleza patria y los códigos culturales que hacen de nuestra gente sean amables, trabajadores, luchadores, aguerridos y que recibimos como en casa al extrajero.
